GURNEY JOINS SEAGULLS 22/12/2007
Weston-super-Mare have completed the signing of former Swindon Town midfielder Andy Gurney and he comes into the side for Saturday`s Blue Square South fixture against in-form Basingstoke Town.
Manager Tony Ricketts tried to sign Gurney, who had a short spell at Weston last season, from league rivals Havant & Waterlooville last week but had no success.
But he made another approach to Gurney (pictured) this week and the experienced midfielder or defender, who found the travelling to Havant a problem, agreed to rejoin Weston.
Former Bristol City and Cheltenham Town left back Mickey Bell, 36, has also been training with Weston and will be signing for them over the weekend.
Ricketts is also hoping to complete the signing of defender Mike Green, the former Bath City player, from British Gas Business Southern League Premier neighbours Clevedon Town.
Ricketts said: "Andy Gurney is the type of player we badly need as he has plenty of experience and can get things organised on the field.
"Mickey Bell was released by Cheltenham at the end of last season. He spent pre-season with Exeter City, but was not offered anything and since then he has been on a plumbing course.
"We have not been able to find anyone to take over from Matt Hale since he moved to Team Bath earlier in the season, but Mickey is the ideal person to come in as he so much experience of league football.
"He will not be involved against Basingstoke, who are the form team with five wins from their last six games, but will hopefully be available for the Boxing Day game against Newport County."
