GURNEY FOR EXILES 12/02/2008
Weston-super-Mare captain Andy Gurney is understood have agreed terms with Blue Square South rivals Newport County and is expected to sign for the South Wales outfit within the next day or so.
Weston manager Tony Ricketts (pictured above) said: “We`re very sorry to loose Andy, as he has brought great leadership skills to the club both on and off the field of play.
“Andy feels though that with Newport County pushing for promotion to the Conference National and felt a move of this kind was too much of a temptation as it could be his last opportunity to play in the highest level of non-League football.
“I’d like to stress that Andy and I have spoken at length about this and I do understand his reasons, although I am obviously disappointed. He goes with our blessing and I am very grateful for all he has done at Weston.”
The Weston manager further explained that he has spoken with other managers and is looking at signing a replacement for Gurney (right) hopefully within the next few days.
