STANT APPOINTS NEW NUMBER TWO
13/07/2002
Phil Stant, the new player-manager of UniBond League Premier Division club Gainsborough Trinity, has appointed the vastly experienced Colin Benson as his assistant-manager.

The pair link up for the second time after working together when Stant (pictured) was in charge of Lincoln City two years ago, and it is the first time in Benson's 26-year career that he has been given an assistant-manager role after spells as coach at Macclesfield Town and Premiership side Manchester City.

Benson, who is a UEFA 'A' badge coach, believes Stant and his newly-reformed Trinity side will take the UniBond Premier Division by storm when the season gets underway next month.

Benson has been impressed with the set-up at The Northolme and he readily admits Trinity could go on to become a league club like his former employers Macclesfield.

The Northolme has already been passed as a Conference standard ground and was recently nominated as having the best pitch in the division.

"Everything is there," added Benson. "When I first arrived at the ground I couldn't believe it. It reminded me of Macclesfield instantly.
"But we have a much better ground, which I think is already Conference standard and with a couple of alterations would reach league standard, no problem.
"The board have been excellent so far, the chairman and director of football, Frank Nicholson, have been superb.
"They have given us their support and that is vital to any club no matter what level they are playing at."
