IMPRESSIVE RECRUITS FOR AIRBUS
19/08/2008
Principality Welsh Premier club Airbus UK Broughton will be able to call on the services of two experienced defenders with a combined total of 373 Football League appearances this season in former Crystal Palace team-mates Craig Harrison and Jamie Smith.

Recently-appointed Wingmakers' manager Harrison has registered as player, while Smith with link-up with the club on his return from holiday as he pursues his coaching qualifications.

Smith (right) joined Wolves as a youth trainee and progressed through the ranks to make his first team debut in 1994, immediately establishing himself as a regular.

He made 104 appearances for the club before leaving in October 1997 as part of the deal that saw Dougie Freedman and Kevin Muscat move to Molineux from Palace, remaining for seven seasons including one in the Premier League and totalling 175 appearances.

Smith also played for Fulham, Bristol City, Brentford and MK Dons before his professional career was ended by a persistent knee injury.

Gateshead-born Harrison (pictured above) signed YTS forms with Middlesbrough as a 16-year-old and was given his first team debut two years later.

A burst appendix kept him out of the game for eighteen months and he then found his spot at left-back occupied by Christian Ziege.

After enjoying a brief loan spell when David Moyes took him to Preston North End, he caught the eye of Crystal Palace manager Alan Smith who splashed £20,000 to take him to Selhurst Park.

But a double compound fracture ended his football career until he succeeded Allan Bickerstaff as Gareth Owen's assistant at The Airfield in 2007.
