GURNEY APPOINTS SMITH AS NUMBER TWO
08/12/2008
Andrew Gurney, the new manager bof Blue Square South club Weston-super-Mare, has wasted no time in appointing Chris Smith as his assistant-manager.

Smith (pictured above) would appear an ideal fit for the role having extensive knowledge of the club after previously serving the Seagulls as manager himself as well as working under Frank Gregan and Tony Ricketts as assistant-manager.

The former Cinderford Town manager and Newport County midfielder has been managing Forest Green Rovers Ladies since leaving the Woodspring Stadium at the end of last season.

It is understood that as with Gurney (right) the position will be subject to review on January 31st.

Commenting on his return to the Woodspring Stadium Smith said: “I’m just glad to be back and if it is just to the end of January then fine but if it is for longer then brilliant.

“I’ve no mis-conceptions about how hard it is going to be.

“There would not have been anybody else that I would of come back for. But Andrew Gurney is a mate and somebody I trust 100%.

“I am desperate for him to do well and I am desperate for the club to do well and whatever little part I can play in that I will be happy to be part of it.

“I know most of the lads and the ones that I do not know have been as good as gold.

“He has got a good bunch of lads here and we just need a bit of belief.

“You have got to respect Gurns for what he has done in football and I think that respect is evident here.”
