PLYMOUTH WIN THE RACE FOR SKEM STRIKER
13/03/2009
UniBond League Division One North club Skelmersdale United`s prolific young striker George Donnelly has signed for Coca-Cola Championship side Plymouth Argyle in preference to an invitation to join Scunthorpe United in League One.

Donnelly (pictured), who scored thirty-six goals in all competitions this season, has finally put pen-to-paper after first catching the eye of former Everton favourite Andy King in November 2008.

King, Plymouth’s chief scout, liked what he saw but needed to persuade the management, and after a visit from Paul Sturrock, Donnelly was asked to trial in a reserve match in Bristol and did enough to catch the eye.

An offer was to follow but was rejected by Skem as it fell somewhat short of the clubs valuation.

During the interim period, other offers were coming in. Southport, then their league rivals Fleetwood Town who were prepared to pay a substantial figure for a Blue Square North club.

Meanwhile, Plymouth had renewed their interest, but with no firm offer tabled, Scunthorpe sneaked in and made an offer which was accepted by the club.

Donnelly made a trip to Scunthorpe which alerted Plymouth, and with a choice to make Donnelly finally accepted the overtures that Argyle were making.

The club has now agreed a fee which is by far a club record.

Skem chairman Frank Hughes said: “On behalf of the club I would like to wish Georgie all the very best for the future.

“It’s been a bit of a personal journey for me, and I feel as though I have shared some of the highs and lows that Georgie has experienced in recent months.

“At the end of the day we all wanted what was best for the club and Georgie, and by holding firm at a stage when it would’ve been easy to buckle under the pressure, I believe that both club and Georgie have reaped the benefits.

“Georgie Donnelly is a fantastic young talent. He’s fast and strong and has two exceptional feet.

“Alongside Craig Noone, who he will now join at Plymouth, Donnelly is the most exciting prospect that the club has ever witnessed since the days of Micky Burns and Stevie Heighway.

“It`s a proud moment for the club to know that they’ve played a big part in his development, and I’m sure he will agree that he owes a huge debt of gratitude to the club, management, players and the fans for all the support that they’ve given him.”
