CLUB CHANGE NAME TO DISTANCE THEMSELVES FROM DISGRACED CHAIRMAN
19/10/2009
Following the stunning news that Vodkat North West Counties League Division One club Oldham Town`s founder and chairman Ken Hughes had been remanded in custody after being
charged with sexual offences against children last week, the club have issued an official statement regarding the situation.

Oldham magistrates charged the 65-year-old with six counts of indecently assaulting a boy and two charges of inciting the same boy to commit an act of gross indecency.

These offences are alleged to have happened in the 1990s.

Hughes is also charged with three counts of causing or inciting a boy to engage in sexual activity between 2006 and 2007 and three offences of engaging in sexual activity with a boy in 2008.

There are thirteen charges in total, involving males now aged 16, 17 and 28.

Hughes founded Oldham Town as local works team George Dew in 1964.

The club`s statement reads: “Ken Hughes` arrest and subsequent charges are so serious and so appalling, that the club, the players, staff, officials and all the members wish to make it clear that we are all deeply shocked, upset and disgusted at these revelations.

“There has been a hive of activity in and around the club since this unsavoury matter has come to light, with daily meetings held to try to find a way, if possible, for the football team to continue to compete in the NWCL.

“To this end, the recreated committee of the club has applied to the FA in London and to our local County FA to re-name the football club, as we all want no connection WHATSOEVER with what was Oldham Town FC and its former chairman.

“We are pleased to confirm that the ‘new’ club can now be named ‘Oldham Boro Football Club’.

“There will no doubt be many hurdles to overcome in the near future, but all we want to do is preserve our football team.

“We ask the local media, local community and veryone connected with the club to pull together and help us through this extremely difficult time.”
