BILEY'S THE NEW MAN FOR TULIPS
11/10/2002
Dr Martens League Eastern Division club Spalding United have appointed Alan Biley as their new manager.

Biley, who made his mark with the likes of Everton, Derby County, Portsmouth and Cambridge United, was introduced to the club prior to Saturday's FA Trophy game against Barton Rovers who, ironically, were managed by him two years ago.

At the end of his Football League career Biley played in the USA and on the Continent before returning to Britain to turn out for Fisher Athletic during their Conference days and at Dulwich Hamlet.

His first foray into management was with Potton United in the Eagle Bitter United Counties League and then with Barton Rovers before resigning after four months to take over at Jewson Eastern League outfit Diss Town.

He was introduced to the Tulips by friend of many years Steve Burton, who was recently appointed the club's director of football. Biley is also a business acquaintance of Tulipsī sponsor Chris Toynton.

He said: "I was surprised and honoured to be asked to join the club. I have been out of the game for three months and Steve's call took me completely by surprise.

"But I am delighted to be here. I know enough about the club from my experience in the UCL. I also realise you have had a few indifferent seasons and that's why I have been approached to do a revival job.

"I'm looking forward to the challenge and building my team but it will not happen overnight. It's ironic that the day I arrive the team produced a good victory. But that's down to Alex Irvine.

"I will be at the helm officially for the league match at Fleet Town on Saturday."

However, Biley, lost a player before he had the opportunity to speak with him.

United Counties League side Blackstone had made an approach for defender Matt Heaton and even before Biley's first training session on Wednesday he had made up his mind to go.

Biley said: "I was disappointed the lad decided to move before I had had the opportunity to speak with him one to one.

"After Saturday's Trophy success I spoke collectively to the players and said that I would not alter things until such time that I hade fully assessed the situation. However, if players are not prepared to stay and battle to become part of my plans then I will not stand in their way. At the end of the day they have got to want to play for Spalding United and be prepared to give their all.

"The immediate task is to put some league points on the board and get away from the bottom rung of the ladder. Some good results over the next three weeks will be ideal preparation for the next round of the FA Trophy when we entertain Hampton & Richmond Borough.

"They are currently at the bottom of the Ryman League Premier Division, a league higher than us, but it is a game we have the chance to win and progress in the competition."
