PREECE APPOINTED AS STEVENAGE NUMBER TWO 20/12/2002
Nationwide Conference club Stevenage Borough have appointed David Preece, former assistant to Roy McFarland at Torquay United, as first-team coach.
Preece will work with manager Wayne Turner to steer the club away from the bottom of the table and he started his new role on Thursday.
Preece (pictured) had been helping Terry Back at Ryman League Premier Division side Enfield for the majority of this season but jumped at the chance to work at Conference level.
Turner said: “I’ve known David for a fair few years, since our Luton days together and since he left Kenilworth Road he has done very well at Cambridge and Torquay.
“We asked him to come and have look at things, tell me if he thinks there are any things that I am missing and we’ll discuss them. His arrival means that we can shuffle the pack. Gary Phillips and John Dreyer are still on board but we can have different assignments. We can get out to games more and share the work-load more.
“Lets hope he gives us something that we have been missing for the last few weeks, where we’ve done everything except win a game.
“David will be in the dug out with me on Saturday, and we’ll have Gary up in the stands for a good viewpoint to give us a different input than we’ve had recently.”
Phillips reverts to the role of goalkeeping coach and John Dreyer continues in his position of player-coach and reserve team manager.
