CHAIRMAN AND MANAGER GO AT SPALDING
26/12/2002
Dr Martens League Eastern Division club Spalding United suffered a double blow in face of the holiday season with both manager Alan Biley and co-chairman Alex Irvine resigning for "personal reasons".

Irvine´s decision to resign was made at a recent meeting of the executive committee and came as a bit of a shock.

It was he who came to the club´s hour of need in the close season following the resignation of Alan Mitchell as chairman.

The club appeared to be on the verge of folding but Irvine took the bull by the horns and put together a survival programme that has met with considerable success, in particular the linking up with the town´s leading junior club Spalding Athletic.

From the outset, however, he has stated that the club needed a Spalding man at the helm - he lives in Grimsby - and was delighted when the principal of the club´s main sponsor, Games Worldwide, Chris Toynton, agreed to become co-chairman.

Irvine said: "It is with some degree of sadness that I leave the club but circumstances do not allow me to continue. I took a sabatacle from work and have given the football club 100 per cent effort for six months. But now I have to look to the future with my family.

"I would like to thank the many people who have supported me during the last few months. People like Richard Hutchinson, Alan Hare, Graham Chappell, Jack Goddard and Brett Maddison have backed me all the way and in many ways I shall be sorry to leave. But I wish the club every success. I know that Chris Toynton´s heart and soul are with the club and that he will continue the work already started."

Former Everton, Luton and Cambridge United striker Alan Biley (pictured), who only arrived at the club in early October, told the players of his decision to quit during the journey to Salisbury City last Saturday.
His assistant Paul Bryant has taken temporary responsibility for the playing side.
