HAND QUITS AFTER FINE ROW 04/05/2012
Hayes & Yeading United skipper Jamie Hand has sensationally quit the relegated Blue Square Bet Premier club.
Hand (pictured) is angry about being fined a week’s wages for his red card in the 1-0 victory at Lincoln City last month.
That win was not enough to save Nas Bashir’s side from relegation and they will be playing in Blue Square Bet South next season.
But they will have to do without Hand as the former Luton Town and Watford midfielder is refusing to play under the rule of chairman Derek Goodall.
“I was fined a week’s wages for my red card, which I feel is a very high percentage,” Hand said. “The most you ever get fined is two weeks’ wages and I don’t think a sending off warrants a week’s wages.
“I’m not asking them not to fine me a penny. I got sent off at Luton earlier in the season and they fined me a percentage of my week’s wages and I know that’s how it’s run at other clubs.
“I’ve taken a harsh view on it and said I won’t play for the club again. Tony [O’Driscoll, director of football] and Nas [Bashir] are telling me it’s the chairman’s decision to fine me. If that’s his decision that’s fine but I won’t play for the club again while he is in charge.
“It’s an easy decision to save a week’s wages in the last week of the season so I think it’s just a financial saving for themselves rather than a club rule.”
