WELLS CHAIRMAN HAPPY WITH JOHNSTON APPOINTMENT 12/06/2012
Steve Loxton, chairman of Toolstation Western League Premier Division club Wells City, says he was always happy to wait for the right man after a two-month search for a new manager ended when Ray Johnston was appointed last week.
The Blues have been without a boss since mid- March following the surprise resignation of Tim Moxey. James Dash and Paul Randall took charge of the first team until the end of the season but now Johnston (pictured) will take the Athletic Ground helm for the start of next term.
He guided Portishead Town to a mid-table finish in Toolstation Western League Division One last season and now the Blues have offered him his first foray into Premier Division management.
"Obviously when Tim stepped down we didn't want it to go on for quite as long as it has done but we would like to thank James, Paul and Steve [Vowles] for what they did during the final few weeks of last season," said Loxton.
"I think we received around seven applications for the job, while we also pursued several other options that we highlighted ourselves before the end of the season because we wanted to ensure we got the best possible person.
"From that time the club has consulted with several respected footballing figures within the area and Ray was a name who was continually mentioned in the highest regard.
"We are delighted he has agreed to come in and will help give the squad fresh ideas and impetus on how to move forward."
After managing at a lower level last term, Johnston is relishing the opportunity to test himself with the Blues next season.
"As a player I always strived to play at the highest level I could and now as a manger I am no different. It's the case throughout football, you want to compete and succeed at the best standard you can," said Johnston.
"I played under quite a lot of managers during my career and they all taught me something. I'm trying to take the best things from each to help move myself forward as a manager.
"It's a great opportunity and one I'm really looking forward to, as I believe we can be a successful combination."
