TRAINING CENTRE HELPS U'S ATTRACT TALENT 30/06/2012
Manager Jez George believes Cambridge United's excellent training facilities play a crucial role in attracting new talent to the Blue Square Bet Premier club.
Summer signings including Tom Elliott, Billy Gibson and Scott Garner have all commented how Clare College Sports Training Ground influenced their decision to join the U’s.
And manager George (pictured) says showing would-be recruits everything the club has to offer can convince them to turn their back on bigger offers elsewhere.
“Whenever we’re trying to attract players we can’t beat other clubs’ finances. But what we can do is get them to Cambridge and show them around,” said George.
“We’ve got to do what we can, so even if we’ve made the lowest financial offer to an agent for a player, if you can get that player here and they think it’s the right place for them, the agent is under pressure to do it.
“One of the facts when you sign a player is they can’t believe you’ve got a facility like that. It’s not only the quality, but the surprise a club at our level has something like that.
“Apart from Granta Cricket Club in the summer and the odd university game, it feels like our own because it’s pretty much just us Monday to Friday and it’s a great environment to work in.”
