|THREE IN, THREE OUT AT CANVEY
Ryman League Premier Division club Canvey Island have announced the signings of goalkeeper Dale Brightly, defender or midfielder Sheldon Sellears and forward Simon Thomas.
Goalkeeper Brightly has previously played for fellow-Essex sides AFC Hornchuch, Billericay Town and Concord Rangers.
He has won promotion to the Conference South in the past two seasons, winning the league with Billericay in 2012 and going up via the play-offs with Concord Rangers in 2013.
He is a local lad who has proved to be a thorn in Canvey's side on numerous occasions over the years.
Sellears is an exciting 21-year-old defender or midfielder signed from Aveley, where he made 36 appearances last season as the Millers reached the Ryman League Division One North play-offs.
He can play anywhere down the right, and has previously played for Bishop's Stortford and Waltham Forest.
He is a highly-rated prospect who has a big future in the game.
Simon Thomas (pictured) is a 28-year-old striker signed from Chesham United.
Having made a name for himself during a two-year stint with Boreham Wood, Thomas signed for Crystal Palace in 2008 where he played in the Football League.
Whilst with the Eagles he spent time on loan with the likes of Rotherham United and Darlington, and upon his release later played for Billericay Town and Grays Athletic.
He joined Chesham United in 2011 and scored 43 goals in 92 appearances over the past two seasons.
Thomas is a locally based player who played twice against the Gulls last season for Chesham in the FA Trophy where he proved a handful.
On the signings, manager Danny Heale commented: "I feel the squad is really coming along now, and it's been great to have brought these players in along with Spencer Bellotti and Matt Game before pre-season starts.
"I'm still having talks with new players as well as members of the existing squad to make sure we're in the best possible shape for the new season."
Meanwhile, as the squad for next season continues to take shape, central midfielder Mitchell Gilbey, goalkeeper Ashlee Jones and winger Dean Mason have all left the club.
Gilbey joined the Academy at the start of the 2011/12 season, making his first team debut later that season in an Essex Senior Cup tie away to FC Clacton where he came off of the bench to score.
He went on to make seven starts and 21 substitute appearances over the next two seasons for the first team, scoring two goals during that time. He also started 35 times for the Academy, notching 18 goals for Laurie Carter's side.
He has joined fellow Ryman League Premier Division side East Thurrock United, filling the gap left by his brother Reiss, who left the Rocks in order to work overseas.
Jones made 48 appearances last season, with Mason making 19 starts and 26 substitute appearances during his two seasons with the club, scoring on two occasions. Mason was also part of the side that won the Essex Senior Cup in 2012.
"We would like to thank all three players the very best of luck for the future and thank them for their efforts while playing for the Gulls," read a club statement.
